HEADLINE: Bonds strategy flawed

SOURCE: The Gazette

BYLINE: PAT HICKEY

BODY:
San Francisco Giants fans have been known to boo opposing pitchers when Barry Bonds is intentionally walked to begin an inning.
But Jerry Reiter, a statistician at Duke University, said any team employing that strategy is doing the Giants a favour.

Reiter analyzed data from the past three seasons and discovered that when Bonds walks with no outs and nobody on, the Giants score at least one run 46 per cent of the time, averaging 0.9 runs an inning.

The Giants are less successful when Bonds gets something to hit. In those cases, the Giants score a run 36 per cent of the time and average 0.6 runs an inning.
