This data arises in investigations of the fundamental stochastic nature of electro-physiological communication in nervous systems, at the subcellular level. Recordings are changes in electrical potential on the cell body of the "receiving" neuron (measured in millivolts). The first column "N" gives voltage without stimulation -- measures of "resting potential". Variations here are due to physiological activity, spontaneous transmission, and experimental noise (mainly through the electronic recording and data collection process). Treat this as "background noise" in the context of which we want to study the "S" column -- Signal data. Each signal measurement is the maximum voltage change induced following stimulus of neural transmission.
