SF four AA residues in the DNA-binding Rel domain mediate a distinct
SF DNA-binding specificity of the RelA (p65) homodimer compared to
SF heterodimers [14];
SF cytoplasmic inhibitors (IkappaB-alpha and -beta) bind to the Rel domain of
SF RelA [31] [30] thus masking the nuclear localization signal [20] [8];
SF the splice variant p65delta cannot dimerize with itself or with p50, but
SF with intact RelA [19], and interacts only weakly with IkappaB-alpha since
SF dimerization is important for inhibitor binding [20];
SF the Rel domain of RelA interacts with leucine zipper structures of c-Fos,
SF c-Jun [16], C/EBP-beta [11], and probably also ATF-a and CRE-BP1 [10];
SF it may also interact with the zinc finger domain of Sp1 [7] and the
SF DNA-binding domain of the estrogen receptor (ER), independent of its
SF ligand-bound status [3];
SF the potent trans-activating domain comprises several subdomains, of which
SF TA2 contains another TA1-homologous region, both revealing a highly
SF amphiphilic character when alpha-helically folded, with one side
SF exclusively comprising serine residues [2];
SF moreover, the trans-activating domain contains several acidic modules with
SF a critical core phenylalanine and flanking bulky hydrophobic residues [2];

FF activator;
FF contributes the major transcription activation domain to the NF-kappaB
FF complex [26];
FF at some sequences, its homodimers may act as transcriptional activators
FF [25] [28];
FF synergistic effects with AP-1 through AP-1 sites as well as through kappaB
FF sites (c-Fos and c-Jun, not JunB or JunD, also not found for NF-kappaB1)
FF [16];
FF similar synergism with C/EBP family members [11] and with Sp1, e. g. at the
FF HIV-1 LTR [15];
FF in T cells, RelA is phosphorylated by a 43 kDa protein kinase associated
FF with the NF-kappaB/IkappaB complex [9];
FF subsequent release of RelA permits nuclear translocation [5];
FF PKC-mediated phosphorylation and trans-activation through TA2 [2];
FF constitutive phosphorylation of TA1 [2];
FF PKA-mediated phosphorylation decreases nuclear translocation of RelA,
FF presumably by decreasing the rate of IkappaB degradation [4];
FF the splice variant p65delta suppresses NF-kappaB activity and exhibits
FF transforming properties [22];
