Information for prospective students and postdocs

Frequently I receive inquiries from students and postdocs interested in joining my research group and studying at Duke, regarding research and funding opportunities, graduate admissions, and postdoctoral positions. I have created this web page to summarize relevant information and avoid repetition. Please see the Schmidler Research Group page for a description of my group's current activities and research directions.

Information for prospective graduate students

Most students interested in pursuing a PhD under my supervision will apply to one of two Duke programs:

Applying: Application materials for these programs can be found on their respective web sites. Both programs have competitive admissions and receive applications from many top students. Please note that I do not currently serve on the admissions committee for either program. If you decide to apply, you may wish to mention your interest in working with me in the application; if the committee wishes to contact me they will do so.

If you are particularly interested in my work or have already done work in related areas, feel free to send me an email and let me know that you are applying. Please do not send me CVs, resumes, or attachments unless I request them. A URL where I can find electronic versions of your publications is encouraged.

Funding: Students admitted to these programs are automatically offered support through RA- or TA-ships. I do not personally offer funding guarantees to any students who are not already enrolled in a Duke graduate program.

On occasion I also work with or advise students from other relevant programs

in some cases as a primary advisor, but more commonly as a joint or secondary advisor. I am not involved in the admissions processes of these departments.

See also the Duke Programs in Biomolecular Sciences, which allows simultaneous application to two Duke PhD programs: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics and Structural Biology and Biophysics.

Information for prospective postdocs and research associates

Postdoctoral positions:

I do not read unsolicited CVs or resumes; please do not send me large attachments unless I request them.
