Public Machines
The following machines are provided by Duke Statistics for purposes of graduate computing and research. If you have any problems, please report them to help@stat.duke.edu. Please be sure to note which machine.
Private Machines
The following machines are the primary research tool of the faculty member listed in the User column. For large jobs, you should request permission from the user.
Staff Machines
The following machines are used by the staff of the department. They are not available for use by others.

Explanation of Duties

- backup
- maintains backup tapes of all important data
- cups — Common Unix Printing System
- manages print jobs
- dhcp — Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
- provies DHCP service for laptops, printers, and Windows machines
- dns — Domain Name System
- serves DNS zones {isds,stat}.duke.edu and provides caching nameservice
- nis
- manages user and group databases for Unix machines
- /home
- serves users home directories via nfs and samba
- kdc — Kerberos Key Distribution Center
- performs authentication for Unix systems and network services
- license
- manages software licenses (e.g. S-PLUS, Mathematica, Matlab)
- receives, sends, and serves email via SMTP, IMAP, and NFS
- samba pdc — Primary Domain Controller
- manages user information and authentication for Windows machines
- /proj
- serves research project directories via nfs and samba
- web
- serves websites and anonymous FTP ({www,ftp}.{stat,isds}.duke.edu)
