Course Overview:

This course is an introduction to modeling, estimation, and hypothesis testing for applied problems in the environmental sciences. Emphasis is on comparisons of means between two or more groups, using both parametric and non-parametric methods. A major focus of our work will be to learn to write literate data analysis reports, and to develop skills to critique statistical analyses. Examples will come from the environmental sciences.

Class Meeting Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays: 12:40 - 1:55. LSRC A247

Computer Lab Sections: As part of the course, students are expected to attend one of the weekly lab sessions, which will emphasize homework questions and computing issues. There will be 3 sections of lab to be held Mondays in 153 LSRC: 8:00-8:50 am, 9:10-10:00 am, 10:30-11:20 am.

Grading Scheme:


Software: S-Plus Version 6 for Windows, Insightful, Inc.

Students enrolled in the course can obtain the software at no charge via download from the OIT website or may purchase a CD for $15.

You will be asked to turn in reports using a word processor with an equation editor. If you use Microsoft Word, you can reinstall the software, select "custom" and install the Word Equation Editor add-on. Other equation editor programs such as MathType can be used in conjunction with Word.
