GUIDELINES FOR THE 110B PROJECT
It can be a group of an individual project. Groups can include up to 3
students.
It has to be related to the Curriculum 2000 proposal, in some way. You
can collect data from students, parents, faculty, the registrar's
office, other universities, the web etc. If you have a creative idea
that sounds a bit off the beaten track, and you are not sure it is
related enough to C2000, email me or talk to me.
To see the current version of the C2000 proposal, look at:
Curriculum 2000
A good project should 1) identify an interesting question; 2) design a
study to address it; 3) collect the data (or find it in some
database); 4) analyze the results; 5) write a brief report.
The report should not be longer than 2 typed pages, not including
figures, and should include the following sections:
- Background and goals of the project.
- Study design. Why is the study design appropriate for the goals?
What are its limitations?
- Method of analysis. Why is the method appropriate for the study?
Justify the choice of any prior distributions.
- Results. What are the conclusions? How confident can we feel about
the accuracy of the results? Are there any caveats in interpreting your
results?
I would love it if by the due-date of the project you could send me
by email a one-paragraph description of your results, written so that it
can be understood without statistical expertise. I would like to use
such desritions to assemble a webpage with results from all your
investigations.
The project is due in class on november 24th.
