Summarizing and Displaying Data with JMP IN

Summarize the data in Problem 1, Chapter 7, using JMP IN, in addition to your hand calculations. Please remember that the quartiles calculated by JMP IN maybe slightly different than what you get using the rules in the text. (The method in the book is a simplified approach, which makes it easier to do by hand.)
  1. Start up JMP IN (Go to the START menu => Programs => Statistics and Mathematics Programs. and then select JMP IN. The program should start with a blank spread sheet "Untitled 1"
  2. Double-Click on "0 Rows" in the upper left corner of the spreadsheet. In the Pop-Up window, specify the number of rows to add, 28. Click on Add or simply hit Enter.
  3. Enter the 28 numbers in Column 1 of the spread sheet. You may rename the column by highlighting the text with the mouse, and then replacing the text with a new name, say "Scores".

Boxplots, Histograms, or other Numerical Summaries

  1. Go to the Analyze menu at the top of the JMP IN screen, and select Distribution of Y
  2. Click on "Scores" (or whatever you named the test score variable) in the scroll bar window, and then click >> Add << . The variable should now appear in the right column. Click OK.
  3. A window should appear with 1) Histogram and Boxplot, 2) Quantiles which contain the min, max, median, lower quartile (the 25th quantile) and the upper quartile (the 75th quantile), and 3) Moments, which include the mean and the standard deviation (Std Dev).
  4. To change the format to a horizontal layout (if you prefer), click on the "check" at the bottom left corner of the output screen, and select "Horizontal Layout".
  5. You can save the output to a "journal file". Go to the Edit Menu, then select Journal. To save it select, "Save as" under the file menu. This can be imported into other programs, such as Word.
  6. To save your data, make sure that the spreadsheet window is selected, (click on the top of the window to bring it to the foreground) and then go to the File menu and select "Save as". Make sure you save data and output to your own disk!
  7. If you wish to print, either print out the Journal File or print directly from JMP IN.

Normal Curves

Make sure you are comfortable using the Normal Tables for calculations. Work through Homework problems 1-5 in Chapter 8.
