Grading Policy
Split of course total
Exams and homeworks will be weighted by the following percentages:
- Homework 10%
- Quizes 15%
- 1st Exam 25%
- 2nd Exam 25%
- 3rd Exam 25%
- No Final
New Deal Rule
If exam 2 (E2) and exam 3 (E3) are much better than
exam 1 (E1), say
E1 < 0.8 *(E2+E3)/2,
then I'll drop the first exam score and replace it by
0.8*(E2+E3)/2.
Same rule for E2 and E3.
Cutoffs
There will be straight cutoffs for letter grades:
- A+: 97.5-100
- A: 92.5-97.5
- A-: 90-92.5
- B+: 87.5-90
- B: 82.5-87.5
- B-:80-82.5
- C+:77.5-80
- C: 72.5-77.5
- C-: 70-72.5
- D: below 70
- F: below 60
Late homework
The lowest homework score will be dropped. Missing homeworks count as
0pts. Late homeworks will not be accepted.
No exceptions from this rule. You can always submit before the due date
of homework assignments.
Quizes
There will be no makeups for quizes, except in extraordinary
circumstances. There will be 8-10 quizes during the semester,
and the lowest 2 grades will be dropped before computing the
quiz average.
Grade appeals
For exams: write a short note of your concern, and hand it to me together
with your exam. If you find someone with more points for the same answer,
show me both exams. I will not downgrade the other exam.
For homeworks: Selected problems will be graded on each homework,
but solutions will be provided for all problems. Grade revisions
on homeworks only within a week after returning the homework (except
of course outright grading mistakes like wrong addition of points etc.)
