STA242/ENV255
Suggested review for midterm exam, February 22, 2001
Areas of emphasis of the midterm will be one-way ANOVA, simple linear regression, and multiple linear regression. Material in Chapters 7-10 will be emphasized, although you should also be familiar with Chapter 5 (one-way ANOVA). Statistical assumptions and their meaning in the context of applied problems are important. Expect a mix of data problems in which you are to interpret Splus output, short calculations, and multiple choice.
3 Practice Midterms from past years are available on the CourseInfo site under "Course Documents". If you haven't taken a statistics exam in a while, it would be worth it to set aside an hour or so and take one of these exams.
In Statistical Sleuth,
Conceptual Exercises from Chapters 1, 5, 6 (go over #6 only), 7, 8, 9, 10.
For Conceptual Exercise #1 in Chapter 9, write out the meaning of the model (that is, give the regression equation) in correct statistical notation for each level of the indicator variable ("at PFI" and "24 days before PFI").
Additional exercises from the Computational Exercises section:
A non-comprehensive list of problems from Moore and McCabe. These problems represent some fundamental concepts in ANOVA and regression and are worth reviewing. In the past, students have found these to be useful for review of more basic concepts.
The best way to prepare is to work practice problems. Unlike other less quantitative courses, outlining the chapters and thinking conceptually about main ideas are not enough. Simulate the midterm exam by working on practice problems, and wait until you are stuck to check your answers. Memorizing previous homework problems will only limit your abilities to think clearly through new problems.
