Obtaining S-Plus
The University has a site license for S-Plus that allows
students to download a copy of S-Plus for free! The
compressed files are just over 100 MB, so downloading this
requires either a fast direct connection (ethernet, LAN, a fast
ADSL connection or a cable modem). The files may be
downloaded to a Zip Drive on campus and later installed on
your computer (if you have a ZIP drive :-). It is not recomended
that you attempt to download the program using a standard 56k
or slower modem! To run S-Plus, it is recommended that you
have a Pentium processor and a minumum of 32 MB RAM.
If you do not have a fast connection to the internet OR a Zip
drive, then you may obtain a CD with the software from the OIT
Help Desk in the North Building for $30. Please pay by check,
credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or departmental IR.
And if all else fails, you can always use S-Plus in the public
clusters on campus!
To obtain the software:
- First fill out the OIT software request form.
You must complete ALL fields on the form. You must enter your
statistics course number (i.e. STA103) in the comments field. If you
do not complete the class info you will not be able to download the
program for free or purchase the CD-rom.
- You will receive an e-mail reply with instructions/options for
getting the software. Software requests take 1-2 business days to
process.
- Once you receive the email from site-licensing, follow the
enclosed instructions. If you are planning on downloading the
software, open the specified URL in your browser. Double click on the
S-Plus.exe file to begin the download procedure to save the
compressed archive file to your ZIP drive or computer.
( Note: the executable file name may change as newer versions
of S-Plus are released; please substitute the correct name wherever
you see Splus.exe, etc.)
If you are purchasing the CD, get the CD from the OIT Help Desk
(North Building) then continue with step 5.
- Once the file has been downloaded to your hard drive, double click
on S-Plus.exe to extract the compressed archive files into a folder
(say SPLUS).
- In your SPLUS folder or on the CD there will be a file called
license key. This contains the serial number/key for installing the
software. Double click on the file to open it or use your favorite
editor to open it and make a note of the serial number.
- To install the software, double click on the Setup icon. When
prompted for the serial number enter the license key/serial number
from 5. Use the default responses to complete the rest of the
installation.
- When you are finished to run S-Plus, you may start it by going to
your Start menu (bottom left) and selecting Programs, then
S-PLUS. (you may also want to create a Shortcut to start S-Plus from
the desktop)
