The four Quizzes are mainly self-explanatory. They will be administered during the Friday recetation section (see venues). Quizzes will cover only the previous week's material; that is, all material introduced from the previous Friday. To see the Quiz dates, check out the course calendar.
The "20 Homeworks" is not a misprint. The homework assignments are designed to make you think about the material covered in class outside of class! They are NOT long, and, if completed as scheduled, will provide an excellent foundation for building solid exam scores, as well as for your understanding more broadly new class topics. Also, under the Homework category I have stuck in two "review sheets". One sheet will be administered a few days before each exam. The sheets are intended to act only as study guides for the exams. **Completion of the sheets is not a substitute for studying!** To see the due dates of all Homeworks and Review sheets, check out the course calendar.
Two tests will be administered. Both will require you to use concepts (gained from class discussion, homework, and quizzes) to find solutions. The tests will not be an excercise in memorization, but will be such that students with a solid understanding of class concepts will have few (if any) problems. The final carries with it more weight as it is longer than the midterm, and builds on material covered in the midterm. Exam dates can be found in the course calendar.
Final grades will be given according to the percentage cutoffs:
Grade: | Percentage: | |
A+ | 97+ % | |
A | 93% to <97% | |
A- | 90% to <93% | |
B+ | 86% to <90% | |
B | 83% to <86% | |
B- | 80% to <83% | |
C+ | 76% to <80% | |
C | 73% to <76% | |
C- | 70% to <73% | |
D | 60% to <70% |
Note that these cutoffs, although fairly strict, are subject to lowering according to class performance. The cutoffs will not be raised, no matter how well the class preforms (as one would hope!).
Finally, throughout the course there will be opprotunities to earn bonus percentage points. The details behind obtaining such points will be given in class; the total possible bonus one may earn will be 1.5%.
