Reading:Chapter 6 sections 6.1 and 6.2. We'll skip
chapters 4 and 5 for now.

lecture/book and as much of chapter 3 lecture/book as we've covered
through Tuesday, Jan. 15, including homeworks and lab 1.
Lecture 5: Likely will finish chapter 6 (see previous
lecture), but may start chapter 7 notes (now
pdf format)
Reading:Still Chapter 6. Also, pp 162-164 of Chapter 7.
New Assignment:Quiz Today! Study materials: Chap 3
lecture/book and as much of chapter 6 lecture/book as we covered
through Thursday, Jan 18 (not Tues. Jan. 22 as first indicated),
including homeworks and lab 2.
New Assignment: Quiz Thursday over material. NOT
CHAPTER 3!!! (Of course, you knew that.)
Suggested Problems: Chapter 7, 1-20; do the problems
corresponding to sections 7.1 - 7.3 (no normal distribution problems
yet). Solutions to even problems
Lecture 12 ("Lecture" 11 was exam 1) Chapter 10 notes (replaces previously posted
version; substantial changes have been made; recycle your first version)
Reading:Chapter 10
No Quiz Thurs.:Quiz is 1 week from today (NOT Thursday)
Suggested Problems:All of Chapter 10 exercises. Solutions to even problems.
New Assignment:Quiz Today. Covers material from Tues.,
Feb. 12, Tues., Feb. 19, and Thurs., Feb. 21. Also, you may want to
look at quizzes 7 and 8 from last semester's sta102 class.
NO QUIZ ON THURSDAYSRemember, our quizzes are now on
Tuesdays unless otherwise indicated.
Suggested Problems:As many as necessary in Chapter 11. Except for the
first 4 exercises, these problems consist of paired-sample t-tests,
two-sample t-tests with equal variances, and two-sample t-tests with
unequal variances. Exercise 13 tries to illustrate why you want to do
a paired t-test when possible (compared to a 2-sample t-test). Be
sure you know how to do each type. I will be clear on quiz/test when
you may assume equal variances or not, but you should be able to use
the information in a problem to choose among a paired t-test or
2-sample t-test. Solutions to even problems.
Suggested Problems:Chapter 13 exercises, as needed. Know
how to recognize a paired testing situation verses the independent (or
two-sample) case. Also, know how to read S-plus output for the tests
in this chapter (you'll see it in class and in lab). See
last semester's STA102 quizzes and tests, too. Solutions to even problems.
Quiz Today:Chapters 11 and 12. No paired t-test since
that's the only remaining topic we have yet to cover in these chapters.
Suggested Problems: As needed. Be able to identify the type
of problem--paired (McNemar's) or not ("typical" chi-square). Solutions to even problems (Word 97/2000 format).
Test one week from today: Material: Chapters 9 - 14. None
of chapter 15.
Data Project Due Today No penalty for handing your
project in by Wednesday, April 24 at 5pm (room 223B Old Chem.). After
that, no credit except by Dean's excuse.
Quiz Today Do "Lab
14" in preparation for the quiz. This is a logistic
regression analysis of Excercise 7, Chapter 20, page 486. Your quiz
will be from this "lab", almost verbatim! So, if you've done the exercise, you should get a perfect score on your quiz. Yes, the TAs will
have the answers at the tutor session, but you should also get
familiar with the S-plus output.
