Practice Problems/Study Hints for Exam 2, The Final

The exam will cover Chapters 8, 9 and 11 through 14 in the book (except for sections 8-6, 9-5 and 13-6) and the associated material discussed in class upto and including the lecture of Tuesday April 27th.

Homework, quiz and old exam problems are a good source of practice. Solutions to homeworks have been posted elsewhere on the class homepage. The best way to prepare for the exam is to work practice problems. It is not necessary to memorize formulae as you are allowed one 8.5 by 11 inch "crib sheet". Rework quiz and homework problems that might have given you trouble, work in-class examples, and look at unassigned problems in the book; the chapter review problems might be a good start. Here are a few suggestions:

8) "Confidence Intervals" (Except Section 8-6).

ISBE 8.7, 8.12, 8.14, and 8.23, and from the review section (pg 350+): 10-23.

9) "Hypothesis Testing" (Except Section 9-5).

ISBE 9.28 and 9.29, and from the review section (pg 350+): 10-17, 10-21 and 10-25.

11) "Fitting a Line" (All Sections).

ISBE 11-7.

12) "Simple Regression" (All Sections).

ISBE 12-5, 12-11, 12-12, and 12-13.

13) "Multiple Regression" (Except Section 13-6).

ISBE 13-5 (a through d), 13-6, 13-9, 13-26 and 13-27.

14) "Regression Extensions" (All Sections).

ISBE 14-1, 14-13, 14-20, and 14-25.

Then test yourself by taking an old Stat 110B midterm. All problems on the test labeled 'Exam 3' are from the material we've covered, but only some of the problems (listed) on those labeled 'Exam 2' are from the material we've covered. The exams are provided in 2 formats: pdf and postscript. You should at least be able to view the pdf version (some students have reported trouble printing* the pdf files). You can print the postscript versions at any of the acpub unix clusters. On a unix cluster machines, netscape will start a postscript viewer called Ghostview to display the document; to print click on the File option and choose Print. You may be able to print postscript files from Macs and PCs if appropriately configured.

Exam 2, Spring 1998 ( pdf format, postscript format). Problem 3 only.

Exam 2, Fall 1997 ( pdf format, postscript format). Problem 1 only.

Exam 3, Fall 1997 ( pdf format, postscript format). Problem 1 and 2 (parts f through k; view the model in problem 2 as a dummy variable regression with 2 variables, exam and subject, both nominal).

Each of these exams (taken in full) should require about one hour and fifteen minutes.

*Note: If you have trouble printing PDF files from acroread try turning OFF "Download Fonts Once" and "Use Printer's Halftone Screen" on the Print menu.
